Dampers App
by TALO-tech
Introduction
As usual the contractors are depending on the Supplier/Manufacturers to select the actuator for their dampers & they don’t even have a clew on how these actuators can be selected, also a lot of people working in the engineering field have the impression that the actuator selection is depending on the pressure inside the duct, while actually all you need to select the actuator torque is the damper size, air velocity/or Air Flow & the type of the damper.
Therefore TALO-tech developed this App hoping that this App which contains several calculations related to dampers such as actuator torque requirement, damper leakage rates, & pressure drop across the damper, TALO-tech hopes that this App will be useful for a wide range people working in the engineering/Contracting industry.
What does D.A App do?
D.A mainly is calculating
- The motorized damper required torque.
- The leakage rate across the damper blades
- The pressure drop Across different type of dampers as per ASHRAE
Basic information & References
The main selection method to calculate the required actuator torque for the motorized damper is the data sheets of actuator manufacturers such as Honeywell, Belimo, SIEMENS, simply by knowing the size of the damper, Air Flow or Air velocity, & the damper type the torque factor can be determined which is determining the torque required. After calculating the required torque, a higher actuator torque to be selected based on the available ranges by the supplier/manufacturer production ranges.
For Air leakage rates calculation, and as per AMCA Publication 511-13 in standard air density and at specific differential pressure, the Maximum allowable leakage can be determined for different classes (from 1A, 1,2, & 3), class 1A is the lowest.
For air pressure drop across dampers, first the pressure drop coefficient must be determined as per ASHRAE Fundamentals data sheets, then the pressure drop across the damper can be calculated by multiplying the damper pressure drop coefficient by the velocity pressure.

General Definitions:
What is parallel Blade Damper?
Parallel blades refer to the movement of the Blades, in parallel blade damper the blades will move together in the same angle & direction while opening & closing, in fully opened position all blades will have the same angle, in fully closed position the blades will close on each other to provide the air tightness.
What is Opposed Blade Damper?
In opposed blade damper the dampers will be in the same angle in the fully opened position, during movement (closing or opening) the odd dampers will move in the opposite direction of the even numbers, and the blades will overlap in fully closed position.
Factor of Safety:
As most of the manufacturers we also advise to consider the factor of safety of 20% to avoid any unseen conditioned which might affect/increase the required torque such as unexpected air velocity, and/or due to damper condition such as sluggish or dirty…etc.
